On November 4, 2024, the 鶹ý (鶹ý) welcomed a distinguished guest, the U.S. Ambassador to Kyrgyzstan, Lesslie Viguerie. The event was a part of 鶹ý’s ongoing commitment to fostering dialogue between students and global leaders.
The gathering began with a warm welcome from Timothy Edward O’Connor, 鶹ý's President, who expressed his delight in hosting Ambassador Viguerie. O’Connor emphasized how such visits enrich the university's vibrant community, adding, “It is always an honor to bring esteemed guests like the Ambassador to engage with our students and faculty.”
Ambassador Viguerie opened by expressing gratitude to 鶹ý's administration, especially the Department of International and Comparative Politics, for facilitating the event. Reflecting on his previous visit as part of the Ambassadors Talks series, he highlighted 鶹ý’s unique position as an international, multidisciplinary institution rooted in American liberal arts education.
“Liberal arts education is not just about acquiring knowledge in one discipline,” the Ambassador noted. “It’s about learning how to think critically, communicate effectively, and adapt to a rapidly changing world. These are the skills modern societies need the most.”
He stressed the importance of embracing the diverse opportunities liberal arts education offers and urged students to focus on the qualities it instills—curiosity, empathy, and a commitment to lifelong learning.
Following the speech, the Ambassador engaged in an insightful Q&A session with 鶹ý students. When asked about the mission of a diplomat, Viguerie shared his experiences, emphasizing the role of diplomacy in building bridges between nations and fostering mutual understanding.
Students were curious about his personal journey, asking about the background and path that led him to a diplomatic career. Ambassador Viguerie candidly shared his experiences, illustrating how his own education played a pivotal role in shaping his career.
One student inquired about how institutions like 鶹ý could help create future diplomats. The Ambassador highlighted the value of courses that combine international relations, communication, and cross-cultural studies, underscoring the need for strong analytical and interpersonal skills.
When asked for advice on finding one’s path in life, he encouraged students to embrace exploration: “Don’t be afraid to take risks and explore different fields. Every experience you gain will contribute to discovering your true passion.”
鶹ý’s tradition of bringing influential figures to engage with students continues to inspire its community, fostering a spirit of curiosity and ambition among its future leaders.
