Total Duration: Orientation Weeks + up to 5 hours per week during academic semesters. Hours vary due to student numbers per Department and peer advisors actively involved.

Description:
Peer Advisors (PAs) are outstanding Â鶹´«Ã½ students who work during the Orientation Weeks and throughout the academic year to supplement the services offered by Academic Advising. PAs provide support for freshmen in creating class schedules, navigating online registration, and understanding the importance of GenEd and Major requirements. PAs are asked to recruit advisees to attend various workshops aimed to improve academic performance, e.g. Study Skills, Time Management Skills, Stress Management workshops. Finally, PAs are mentors helping freshmen learn to think for themselves, settle in and become comfortable at Â鶹´«Ã½, answer questions about how to get involved, and model mature behavior when communicating with fellow students, faculty, and staff.Ìý
Preferred Requirements:
- 3.0 GPA or higher
- Strong Knowledge of Academic Rules and Regulations of Â鶹´«Ã½
- Familiarity with Student Service Offices of Â鶹´«Ã½ – Admissions & Fin Aid, SSC, Registrar, Advising, WARC, Library, Career Center, Student Life/Clubs
- Leadership skills – remaining positive, pro-active, and helpful with students who are learning their way
- Available in May for training sessions and commit to peer advising during Orientation Weeks
- Available throughout semester (up to 5 hours per week) for mentoring freshmen and participating in Academic Advising events—workshops and presentations on study skills, time management, reading skills—for a total of about 75 hours per semester
Tasks:
- Welcome students to the university at the beginning of Orientation
- Serve as a primary student contact to give information about academic related issues
- Assist freshmen to complete their class schedules and Online Registration; remain in contact with freshmen during the semester
- Be available to help students to give information about campus resources, offices, and faculty for the assistance
- Perform other assigned relevant duties
- Attend learning skills workshops; Have 3 workshops for your advisees on range of topics (time-management, concentration, note-taking, reading strategies, stress-management)
- Do 10 posts on social media, including stories (Facebook, Instagram, Telegram), 1 orientation day leading activity (introduction, how he/she helped today, ask 3 questions FYS professor)
- Write down a short review for one of the self-development books on various topics from time-management to learning skills
